ENGINEERING DISCIPLINES AND EXPERTISE The Next Step Team’s Design and Construction Services (DCS) have fully developed the necessary core engineering disciplines to successfully meet the requirements of our clients. Internationally, the Next Step International Team has been actively involved in engineering and environmental projects for more than three decades and has acquired extensive experience in a variety of fields including design/build of municipal infrastructures, civil construction; water supply and treatment; wastewater treatment facilities; remediation of contaminated sites; groundwater treatment; operations and maintenance (O&M) services, etc. 1. Civil Engineering In-house expertise in a broad range of civil engineering includes roadwork design, earthen structures, and containments associated with site remediation/landfill and site work grading projects. In addition, civil expertise is required for works related to municipal infrastructure such as gravity sewers, force mains, pump stations, water reservoirs, water supply and treatment, and wastewater conveyance and treatment. 2. Structural Engineering Full in-house capability is available for reinforced concrete design and building structural steel. Services are provided for a wide range of projects including water, wastewater and groundwater treatment facilities, underground concrete storage tanks, pumping and booster stations, landfill gas collection and flare systems, sheet pile walls, secondary containment structures and lining systems, building modifications and new installations at industrial facilities, retaining walls for creek rehabilitation and storm water management structures. 3. Geotechnical Engineering More than 50 qualified professional staff located in numerous offices provides Geotechnical engineering services. These considerable resources include an affiliated company, Inspec-Sol, which specializes in geotechnical engineering and has grown to become a leading firm in the field with a staff of over 100 professionals, field technicians/technologists, laboratory staff, and support personnel. Geotechnical professional services include investigations, designs and/or analyses for landfill caps and liners, borrow sources, landfill settlement, slope stability in soil, rock, and refuse, building foundations, tunnels, pavements, concrete, blasting, vibration monitoring, rock cuts, shoring, rock mechanics, and linear projects (power transmission lines and pipelines). Field quality assurance testing is provided for all the scopes of work described above by trained engineers, geologists, and technicians. 4. Mechanical Engineering The Next Step International Team mechanical engineers provide services to clients in all phases of planning, development, and design. Our expertise includes process piping and plumbing, fire protection systems, energy management and control systems, building environmental systems (HVAC), energy conservation systems, noise and vibration analyses, material handling systems, water hammer analyses and solar and cogeneration power systems. 5. Process Engineering The Next Step International Team has a great deal of in-house expertise and experience in process engineering services. This expertise includes preparation of process flow diagrams, process hazard reviews, troubleshooting, startup and operations activities and training, process evaluation/optimization, and plant modification additions. 6. Electrical Engineering The Next Step International Team electrical engineers meet client needs with a comprehensive range of services. Our projects and areas of expertise include design of systems for power distribution and control, security and surveillance, emergency power, fire alarms, indoor and outdoor lighting, and standby and cogeneration power. Instrumentation and Controls The Next Step International Team has in-house specialists to provide process instrumentation and control for a broad range of engineering and environmental projects. Depending on client requirements, systems can be designed for manned or unmanned operations, with local and/or remote alarms and data gathering. Level controls, intrusion, fire, and temperature alarms; pressure and flow monitoring; data collection, transmission, downloading, automatic report generation, etc. are some of the instrumentation and control systems that can be incorporated into a project. These services are provided for projects as simple as a leachate pump in a leachate collection system, to sophisticated controls for specialized water and wastewater treatment systems. CONSTRUCTION AND CONTRACTING SERVICES 1. Services during Construction During the construction phase, the planning, design, procurement, and client expectations become a reality as a facility is constructed. The Next Step International Team’s goal is to assume a leadership role during the construction phase by encouraging communication and understanding between the project participants, contributing to solutions, completing submittal reviews, inspections, Request for Information (RFI) responses, delivery of owner furnished equipment, processing payment requests, coordination of contractor, owner, and owner operations staff, and to resolve disputes in a fair and expeditious manner. The Next Step International Team maintains a full complement of staff experienced in procurement phases, pre-construction phase requirements, construction contract administration and site observation, facility start-up/performance phases, and project completion and closeout phases. 2. Construction Management The Next Step International Team has acquired extensive experience in all aspects of construction management, which ensures a cost-effective implementation of the design product. Next Step International offers model construction contract documents and specifications, which have been used successfully on many large complex landfill and environmental projects. Next Step International approach to staffing for construction management activities has been developed to ensure continuity of design staff for technical oversight and review of the project during construction. Flood Control The Next Step International Team has provided flood-control planning services to a variety of clients, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nigerian State and local governments, and watershed management organizations. These projects have ranged in size from large, complex river and basin studies to small stream and lake management efforts.
